Scouting the Mavericks: UNO finished last season with a 19-18-2 overall record and finished 14-12-2 in the Western Collegiate Athletic Association, good for seventh place in their final campaign in that league. The Mavericks open this season in the brand new National Collegiate Hockey Conference…UNO returns 16 letterwinners from last season, including senior forward Ryan Walters, one of the 10 finalists last season for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given to Division I men’s college hockey’s most valuable player…The Mavericks welcome eight freshmen to their lineup this season…Ryan Massa will start in goal for UNO on Monday. He is the Mavericks’ only goaltender with previous college hockey game experience.

Scouting the Ooks: NAIT is 5-1-0 so far this season, with its only loss coming in overtime to Concordia on Sept. 27. NAIT’s last two games were wins in a home-and-home series with league rival Red Deer…NAIT assistant coach Mike Gabinet is a former UNO player, having skated for the Mavericks between 2000 and 2004.
